Athens Sightseeing

Acropolis

The Sacred Rock of the Acropolis is the most visited site in Greece,
attracting millions of visitors each year. The fortified hill is 156 metres
high and is situated in the centre of Athens; the buildings are of inestimable
historic value. It is a unique testimony to the civilisations that held
sway in Greece from prehistoric times until the present day. Artefacts
have been discovered that prove people lived there since the 3rd millennium
BC.
The monuments that have withstood the test of time until today date from
the 5th century BC and remain the most important examples of ancient
Greek architecture; The Parthenon; the Erechtheion; the Propylaia and
the Temple of Athena Parthenos. The Parthenon especially is a monument
which demonstrates the aesthetics and evolution of one of the most
ancient civilisations.
It has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987.

The Acropolis Museum

The museum is an archaeological museum focusing on the artefacts
discovered at the site of the Sacred Rock and its foothills. The museum
was built to house every item that has been found on the hill and
surrounding area, and covers in this way a broad span of time from the
Mycenaean period up to Roman times, and the early Christian city of
Athens.
The foundations for the new museum were laid in 2003, and the doors
opened to the public in 2009.

Lucabettos

A bird’s eye view of Athens! A worthwhile trip up to the highest hill in Athens
277 metres above sea level will aord the visitor a breath-taking view of the
whole of the Athens basin and as far as the Saronic Gulf.
According to mythology, a limestone mountain fell out of the hands of the
goddess Athena thereby creating the hill which is credited to her.
Visitors may use the funicular railway to get to the top from its starting point
in Kolonaki, at the junction of Ploutarchou and Aristippou Street. Alternatively,
there is a pathway which leads up to the crest of the hill through pine trees
and dense bushes. For the less energetic, however, there is a road which
winds up to top with ample parking for cars in the vicinity of the theatre
which was constructed during the 1960s.
Further up the hillside there is the small church of St George built in the 19th
century, and also a restaurant. Coming back down toward the pathway one
comes across the church of St Isidore.
Lycabettos hill is considered to be one of the most romantic places in Athens
especially at sunset and in the evening.

Panethanaic Stadium – Kallimarmaro Stadium

The Panathanaic Stadium was founded by Lukourgos in the 4th century BC in
a hollow, or natural valley in the hill Ardettos and was expanded during the
years of Herodes Atticus.
After the decline of the city of Athens during the Christian years and the years
of foreign rule the stadium fell into ruins and was covered by tons of earth.
The site was excavated and the ancient stadium was rebuilt with white
Pendelic marble (hence its name Kallimarmaro) in time for the Olympic
Games in 1896. Since then the stadium has been host to the greatest athletic
events in Greece, and it is here that the classic Marathon nishes every year to
commemorate the athlete Spyro Louis who was the winner of the marathon
in 1896.
The nishing line for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Marathon was also in
the Panethanaic Stadium.

Odeon of Herodes Attikos

The Odeon was built during the Roman period about 170 BC and has a
seating capacity of about 5000 seats. The construction of the theatre was
funded by the wealthy benefactor of Athens Herodes Atticus in order to
honour the memory of his wife Rigillis. During ancient times, an odeon was
used for musical events, and diered from theatres in only one respect: an
odeon was designed to have better acoustics.

Hadrian’s Gate

Hadrian’s Gate was constructed in order to honour the Roman Emperor
Hadrian as a token of the Athenians’ gratitude for the number of works he had
been responsible for in the city. The site of Hadrian’s Gate was not chosen by
chance as would appear to be the case today. In ancient times the gateway
spanned an ancient road and set the boundary between the historic centre of
Athens on one side and the modern section on the other side where Hadrian
had completed important public works. On one side of the gate there is
inscribed the words, “This is Athens, the ancient city of Theseus”; on the other
side the inscription reads, “This is the city of Hadrian and not Theseus”.
The lower section of Hadrian’s gate follows Roman architectural tradition,
while the upper part is Greek.

National Archaeological Museum

The National Archaeological Museum of Greece is one of the most important
in the world in the eld of ancient art. All the civilisations which thrived in
Greece from prehistoric times up to the Roman period are represented in its
collection.
The museum is situated in Athens on Patision Street, next to the National
(Metsovian) Technical University’s historic group of buildings. There is a wide
paved square in front of the buildings, toward Patision Street.

Plaka – Monasteraki

Walking through Plaka under the shade of the Acropolis today is much like it
would have been in old Athens during the 19th century.
The Roman Agora, the church of St Katherine, Byzantine churches, mosques,
the renovated Turkish Bath, the old University, the mansion house of Venizelos,
the old elementary school, and many ne houses as well as more humble
ones are some of the characteristic sights of this very old Athenian neighbourhood,
and perhaps the most ancient in Europe as it has been in existence for
3.500 years.

Commercial Centre

The commercial centre of Athens includes the area from Syntagma Square to
Omonia Square with all its adjoining streets.
The whole of the historic centre of Athens is full of wonderful sights and
should not be missed. A grand tour of the area will provide the visitor with
ne examples of all city planning stages from ancient buildings and temples
to modern shopping malls and hidden treasures in arcades or along picturesque
pedestrian streets.

Gazi Square

The square that never sleeps! The square was constructed over the train
station of Kerameikos and is one of the liveliest in the area as everything starts
and nishes here.
There is a wide choice of entertainment from ouzo bars, taverns, restaurants
and modern canteens, coee shops and bars all of which go to make a type of
entertainment that one rarely comes across in a contemporary metropolis.

Thiseio Square

This square is just the place to enjoy a peaceful conversation amongst friends
over a cup of coee, perhaps after a pleasant walk with a view of the Acropolis.
It is situated between Nileos Street and Akamantos Street and the pedestrian
streets Irakleidon and Apostolou Pavlou.

The Old Palace – Parliament

This imposing yet unadorned building today houses the seat of government,
the Greek Parliament. It was constructed in 1843 in order to become the
palace residence of King Otto. It was designed by the German architect
Gartner and was situated then on the outskirts of the city near the gateway in
the old walls, between the hills of the Acropolis and Lycabettos.
In 1935, the government under Venizelos decided to move the Parliament
and Senate to the old palace. After the dictator Metaxas other state departments
were also housed in the same building. The Greek Parliament reopened
in 1946.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is found on the west side of the building,
and the open land both on the east and south side is now converted into the
large National Park.

The Temple of Poseidon Sounio

Cape Sounio was during ancient times the southern boundary of the
city-states of Athens. The Athenians built a temple surrounded by walls. The
temple also included other lesser temples dedicated to the gods of the city.
The most important temple is dedicated to Poseidon, the god of the sea. It is a
temple of the Doric order and is the only one to have survived until today. It is
situated 73 metres above sea level. The second temple in importance is
dedicated to the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom and the goddess
from whom Athens obtained its name. In the grounds surrounding the
temple many statues were also erected, dedicated to the gods by the city or
by renowned Athenians. One of these statues is the Kouros of Sounio and it is
exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum.
In ancient times these temples were not all white, but were decorated in
many colours.

Public Transport – Bus services

Intercity Buses leave from Pedeon Areos terminal every 30 minutes: the route
passes through Paiania – Koropi – Markopoulo – Keratea – Lavrio and Sounio,
from 6am until approximately 9pm. The journey takes about 2 hours as the
bus makes frequent stops. However, there is a daily express bus service which
uses the Attica Highway.
Intercity buses also leave Pedeon Areos for Glyfada – Saronida – Anavissos –
Legena – Sounion and Lavrio every hour. The trip takes 2 hours 30 minutes.

Beaches from Lagonissi toward Sounio

Grand Resort Lagonissi: It is not only the wonderful blue water of this
resort that makes it a popular choice but also the centre for water sports
which attracts athletic people; the centre oers a choice of y boarding, SUP
yoga, and lessons in windsurng.
Of course, the wooden swimming pool is a great favourite too as one can
relax by the side of the pool and order drinks from the floating bar.

Heaven Beach Lagonissi

Saronida Beach

Mavro Lithari: A little further on after the junction of Kalibion on the
Athens/Sounio road visitors will arrive at this organised beach and can play
beach racquets and listen to loud music.

Eden Beach: Refreshing smoothies or a cocktail while enjoying the comfort
of wooden beach beds with their turquoise cushions at sundown which
bathes the scene behind the beach’s characteristic rock trademark in red.

St Nicholas Anavisso: About 1 kilometre further along from Eden Beach
one meets this big sandy beach, on the left of which stands the dominant
stone church of St Nicholas. By following the footpath the visitor arrives at
the wonderful clear water among the rocks.

Kouros Surf Club: For water sport enthusiasts including windsurfing.
(tel. 2291040804)

Alikon Anavissou Beach: A big sandy beach ideal for families. It also oers
an electronic ramp for people with special difficulties.

Thymari: One reaches this beach a short way from the row of taverns in
Palaia Fokaias, just after the sign post which reads Thymari. Parking is easy
in the wide opening between the two beaches; a small stony bay on the one
side, and a larger sandy beach on the other. The water is crystal clear but the
rocks in the water can present a problem.

Harakas: This beach is located on the way to Sounio before the boundary
of the municipalities of Lavrio and Keratea. It is easy to nd because of the
sign post on the left which reads “Traditional Community Harakas”. Parking is
available a little further down on the right, and all that remains is to choose
a spot on the sandy beach without rocks in the sea for a wonderful swim in
its clear water. The beach compares favourably with that of Legraina.

KAPE: It stands out because of the truly Cycladic quality of the sea which
is not found anywhere else in Attica. Driving toward Legraina, it is situated
on the right and is clearly sign posted, “Private KAPE”; the beach is at the end
of an unmade road and there is a parking area. The rest of the way is on foot
with steps that lead down to the sandy bay with its blue water. For anyone
who wishes to avoid a lot of people, there is an alternative. On the left facing
towards the sea there is a second, smaller sandy beach quite isolated as it is
approached by wading through the sea behind the rocks

Southern Suburbs: Beaches from Lagonissi toward Athens.

St Nicholas Lagonissi

St Marina

Barkiza Yabanaki:This small town with its exotic name offers the chance of real enjoyment by the sea shore.
It provides everything from food and drink, wonderful summer music, children’s play area, and sports in order to
spend a really enjoyable day.

Kavouri: It is one of the prettiest beaches in Attika with a wonderful view
of the southern suburbs. There is another beach only a few hundred metres
away called Great Kavouri.

Galazia Beach: This beach is at the 37th kilometre on Sounio Avenue. It is a small
but very charming beach with fine sand. There are few amenities
for visitors but not very far away there are shops that sell just about everything
necessary.

Glyfada: Even though this beach is in a very busy suburb of Athens it is
relatively peaceful when compared to other beaches only a few hundred
metres away. It remains one of the places where one can swim in relative
seclusion.
